Fixed fee, CPA or both? Choosing an iGaming affiliate deal
The commission model shapes how an affiliate partnership behaves. A plain-English comparison of fixed fees, CPA and hybrid deals for operators and affiliates.
Affiliate marketing works because both sides win when the right players arrive. How you pay for those players — the commission model — decides who carries the risk and how the partnership behaves over time. Here are the common options and when each one makes sense.
Fixed fees
A fixed fee is a set amount for an agreed placement or campaign: a review on a site, a position on a comparison table, a newsletter feature. The affiliate knows exactly what they'll earn. The operator knows exactly what they'll spend.
Works well when the affiliate has strong, predictable visibility in a market and the operator wants guaranteed exposure — for example, during a launch.
Watch out for paying for exposure that doesn't convert. Agree up front how results will be tracked and reported.
CPA (cost per acquisition)
With CPA, the operator pays a set amount for each new player the affiliate refers who meets an agreed condition — usually making a first deposit. The operator only pays for results; the affiliate earns more by sending better-qualified traffic.
Works well when tracking is reliable and both sides agree on what counts as a qualifying player.
Watch out for vague definitions. Write down the qualifying criteria, the tracking method and the reporting schedule before any traffic is sent.
Hybrid deals
A hybrid combines a fixed fee with CPA. The affiliate gets some certainty for the work and placement, and both sides share in the upside when the traffic performs. Hybrids are common when an affiliate is strong in a market but the operator is new to it.
Set the deal by market and audience
There's no single right answer. The same affiliate might work on CPA in one market and on a fixed fee in another, depending on the audience and how established the operator is there. Setting billing by target market and audience keeps the deal fair for both sides.
Put it in one contract
Whichever model you choose, the most important protection is clarity: transparent payment terms, agreed tracking and regular reporting. At I-Gaming Admins we ratify every partnership in a three-party contract between the operator, the affiliate consultant and IGA, with no hidden fees or costs.
Whichever model you pick, review it after the first few months. Traffic quality, conversion and market conditions change, and a deal that started as a fixed fee can move to CPA — or a hybrid — once both sides have real numbers to work with.
